Watch this space!

Sorry for the lack of activity on our blog for the past two months due to some changes in staff.

Firstly unfortunately the Dragon boat festival has been postponed until October as a result of circumstances beyond our control. We would still really appreciate any sponsors and rowers for our team to compete successfully!

We have just started our programme of woodwork and pottery classes, teaching our trainees new skills to transfer into employment.

We have some very exciting things happening at the Beneficial Foundation with plans to expand our café into a restaurant. The summer is upon us and are trainees are working very hard in producing a range of hand made crafts and plants available from our Enterprise Emporium.

The Big Bene Appeal is still going ahead and we have some very exciting news to announce. So watch this space for the latest information on how you can help with our fundraising events.

Fire Station Visit

Thanks to Southsea Fire Station our students have been given the chance to visit the Fire Station and learn all about health and safety, what to do in the event of a fire and how to prevent fires from happening in the first place. This knowledge will be incredibly valuable for our students and there's no better way to learn about it then from real fire fighters!

All of our students will be given the opportunity to visit the Fire station multiple times so that they can cover all of the important things they need to learn.

By the end of the visits our students will have earned themselves a certificate showing how well they've done and how much they've learned. Most importantly they will have gained some very valuable lessons.

First official football tournament

Friday 20th March saw the Beneficial Foundation football team take part in their first ever tournament at Brighton and Hove Albion training center. We went along with coaches from Pompey In The Community.

Even though our students didn't win, they put in a tremendous effort and were clapped of the pitch by everyone. We finished the tournament with a fun game between the staff and coaches who managed the tournament.

Stephen showed of some great skills during all the games and got very close to scoring a wonderful free kick, however the Brighton goal keeper did especially well to stop the goal!

Nicky Bleach scored our only goal after managing to dribble past 3 Brighton players and sending the ball through the goal keepers legs.

Our goal keeper Nicola Wearing made some excellent saves and helped to stop a lot of goals from going in.

Louise and Russel were our defensive players and made a lot of brave tackles and blocks.

Miles and Gavin were the heart of the midfield showing some solid chemistry throughout the tournament and helped kick off from the centre of the pitch.

We didn't go home empty handed either, everyone was given a medal for taking part and putting in such a great effort!

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to all the staff who organised the event, we were very pleased to represent Portsmouth in the tournament. Thanks also to Pompey In The Community as well!

The Power Of Volunteers

Here at the Beneficial Foundation we love Volunteers. According to our volunteers they love us too. The Beneficial Foundation, as a charity values the time each and every volunteer dedicates to us, and without kind hearted volunteers we know that we wouldn't be where we are.

As a volunteer with the Beneficial Foundation we’ll try to get you working in the areas that interest you most. Whatever skills you may have to share, you can be sure that we will utilise them in the best way possible.

Summer, who has been volunteering with us for over a year now, is currently working on the Big Bene Appeal which is the name of our annual fundraising campaign. For this project she often finds herself using her creative ability for designing advertisements on Photoshop or making things to sell for example the ‘Blind Date With A Book’ event which took place over valentines. Summer volunteers in her spare time on Thursday’s after College. At Portsmouth College she studies Geography, Business Studies and English Literature.

Not everyone is willing to just give up their spare time to volunteer but a lot of the time people don’t know the difference just a little bit of their time could make. Volunteers often describe their time here as rewarding in so many ways. Not only will volunteering look excellent on your CV but you’ll also be able to pick up so many new skills to support you with your future prospects.

We’re looking for skilled individuals to work in areas like gardening, wood work, marketing, catering, fundraising and social enterprise.

According to a survey by Reed Employment 73% of Britain’s top businesses said they would rather employ someone who has volunteered before.

If you’d like more information regarding volunteering with us please don’t hesitate to contact us on 023 9273 3822.
